Djembes

jembes

Price: NZ$650

Dimensions: 13 inch/33 cm head

This is a gobelet-shaped drum, carved from one solid piece of wood. It is rapidly becoming the most popular type of drum in the world. A properly tuned djembe produces both cracking high slaps as well as a solid resounding bass note, on the one head.

Originally a blacksmith's drum from West Africa, it uses steel hoops to tension the goat skin, without any holes pierced through the hide. The resulting tension is the secret of the wide range of sounds.

Djembes are sold either with a sitting harness or standing harness.

Djembes made to order can have any customised decoration.

Price: NZ$300

Dimensions: 12 inch/30 cm head

These hand drums are compact and easily portable, they are wondeful travelling companions .

Originally a Nigerian drum, the name has come to refer to any conical single-headed drum. Modern roping similar to the djembe has made this into a high performance drum with a clear booming bass note.

Dununs

DunDuns

Price: NZ$350-$450-$600
( Kenkenni - Songbong - Dunumba )

Dimensions: 11-14-17 inch head

These are double headed bass drums, played with large sticks. Bells can be mounted on top of the drum.

Usually bought in pairs, or as a set of three, they are the traditional accompaniment to the djembe in West African music.

Dununs are tuned relative to each other, and together provide the solid groove of African percussion ensembles.

Dununs are usually played horizontally, but a customised tripod can be made for a vertical position.

Frame drums

Frame drums

Price: NZ$95

Dimensions: 23 inch

Very large and light, these drums are perfect for situations where you need to stand or walk (around the campfire, horse trekking, hitchiking).

A highly organic sound.

The tension on the goathide varies almost instantly if you warm the drum, or expose it to bright sunlight.

A soft leather beater gives the best sound, but any stick or hand action works.

When not being played, your Songbong frame drum will hang, enhancing your wall with its beautiful designs, without taking up floor space.

Price: NZ$20 to $70

Dimensions: 4- 6- 8 inch head

We propose a range of very small, small and medium size colourful drums. Their size and light weight make them ideal for kindergartens and schools.

They are the cheapest drums in our range, but they still use genuine goatskin on both ends.
